Optical Fiber Vibration Sensor and Application

Abstract(in English) Fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG), rotation sensor, and fiber-optic distributed temperature sensor (DTS) have been developed and are now used in various industrial systems. If such well-established technologies can be applied to vibration measurement, stable characteristcs and reliability under severe environmental conditions, such as physical security and health-monitoring of a structure, are expectable. A Sagnac interference system of FOG and an optical time domain refrectometer (OTDR) function of DTS have been investigated to be used for a vibration sensing. In order to apply a Sagnac interference type vibration sensor to a security system, the sensor was installed on the institution perimeter fence and the performance of vibration sensor and the validity of signal processing to judge human intrusion was verified.
