Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Facial expression mimicking, which transcribes a user's facial expression to another person, has been researched so as to synthesize facial expressions for video games and movies, and to create intelligent agents with natural expressions. One approach to facial expression mimicking is to utilize the Active Appearance Models (AAM) that is a facial image model containing some parameters for controlling both shape and texture of a facial image. It can synthesize detailed facial image including surface appearance. In the mimicking process, the AAM parameters, which synthesize the approximate facial image to the original facial image, are searched for in the first step. And then, the facial expression parameters are extracted from the AAM parameters. Finally, the expression parameters are added onto the prepared facial image. The AAM parameters of the approximate facial image are searched for by minimizing the mean square error of gray-level intensity. However, there are some cases that an erroneous facial image is synthesized when using the mean square error. In this paper, we employ intensity gradient in the parameter search process to prevent synthesizing an erroneous facial images. The experimental results show that our new approach is effective for synthesizing subjectively natural facial images with correct shape.
