Look Back to Development of Personal Satellite Communication Systems

Abstract(in English) Early in the 1990s, a lot of personal satellite communication systems were proposed for the purposes of providing data and voice global mobile communications services through the non-GSO (Geo-synchronous satellite orbit) satellite or GSO satellite to the ordinary common users by using handheld terminals. These personal satellite communication systems are categorized into four systems; Little LEO, Big LEO, Super GEO and Broadband SAT systems according to the employing satellite orbits and providing service menus. Presently, although few of those proposed systems are in operations, most of systems were abandoned for the development of systems from the various reasons such as the shortage of developing cost and inaccurate demand forecasting for the number of subscribers and service menus. This paper firstly presents the backgrounds why many personal satellite communication systems were proposed early in the 1990s including their systems descriptions. This paper also looks back to the development of personal satellite communication systems from the viewpoints on the situation of terrestrial mobile communication services at present and 20 years ago.
