Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Mobile Broadband services are actually expected to become popular by means of progress of mobile networks toward 4G and release of attractive handsets such as smart phones, as well as fixed broadband services. As a fundamental infrastructure for the broadband services, Passive Optical Network (PON) systems are well known. This paper firstly describes a brief overview of the PON system upgrade, and then trends in standardization and R&D activities of the next-generation PON systems such as 10G-EPON, and finally discusses the requirement of the optical access system for future mobile backhaul networks.
