A Study of Snow Cover and Snowfall Observation System with Ultrasonic Distance Sensor

Abstract(in English) In the snowy country, snow removal by the snow blower is very important activity for preventing traffic accident. In this paper, in order to support the efficient activity by the snow blower, we propose a snow cover and snowfall observation system with ultrasonic distance sensors. From the result of experiment from Dec. 2010 to Mar. 2011, we have confirmed that the ultrasonic distance sensor can measure the amount of snow cover. Furthermore, the proposed system calculates the amount of snowfall from hourly snow cover data, and we have clarified that snowfall can support the snow blower.
