Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Although image features of hippocampal regions including their volumes and shapes would be feasible for diagnosing the dementia of Alzheimer type (DAT) in early stages, it would be very difficult to quantify such features and would be time-consuming to diagnose the DAT. We have attempted to develop an automated segmentation method for three-dimensional (3D) hippocampal regions in magnetic resonance (MR) images. First, hippocampal probabilistic atlases were produced by registering all images of 9 control subjects, which include hippocampal regions determined by a manual method, to a reference image of a subject by using a linear registration followed by a non-linear registration. Next, pixel value probability distributions of the hippocampal regions and their surroundings were obtained from the corresponding regions in all training cases. Finally, hippocampal region of each case was estimated based on a maximum a posteriori estimation using the probabilistic atlas and the pixel value probability distributions of the hippocampal regions and their surroundings. For evaluation of the proposed method, we applied it to ten training cases, and then calculated a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), which was the degree of the agreement between the hippocampal regions determined by the manual method and the proposed method. The average DSC was 0.63±0.13.
