Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An important capability for service robots working with humans in indoor environments is their ability to categorize the different places where they are located. In this paper we present an approach to categorize different areas in indoor environments using an RGB-D sensor like the Kinect camera. First, RGB images are transformed into grey scale images. Then, grey scale and depth images are transformed into histograms of local features that incorporate neigh-boring relations by applying local binary patterns and also a short version of this pattern. The feature vectors corresponding to grey scale and depth images are combined and categorized into different places using supervised classifiers like for example support vector machines. We apply this method to distinguish five different place categories and obtain high recognition rates.
