Comparison of Various Computation Methods in Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging and its Application to Atlas Construction

Abstract(in English) In diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) for quantifying the non-Gaussian motion of water molecule, several pairs of an imaging parameter; b value and measured signal; S(b) are used to approximate S(b) curve and DKI parameters such as diffusion kurtosis. Including our closed form expressions we have reported before, with which we can analytically obtain those parameters by least square fit, there exist several computing methods for DKI parameter computing. Those variations are characterized by number of used b values, S(0) estimation, outlier removal, etc., but no comparison was performed so far to clarify their advantages and disadvantages. In this report, we describe comparison results of 6 methods for DKI parameter determination by using rate of computation error, which is defined as deviation of a value range of a biophysical basis. In addition, we apply the best method among the six methods to construction of a diffusion MRI parameter atlas consists of statistics of diffusion anisotropy, diffusion coefficient, and diffusion kurtosis.
