Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An arteriovenous fistula is created in the forearm of the patient under the hemodialysis treatment. To prevent its stenosis and occlusion, frequent maintenance of the fistula is required. We have developed a simple and noninvasive technique to obtain transillumination images of the arteriovenous fistula utilizing the light scattered in the body tissue. In this study, the feasibility of the proposed technique was examined in the experiment using the model phantom which simulates the blood vessels in the adult forearm. A measurement system was developed and transillumination images were analyzed. It was demonstrated that the blood vessel of 1 mm diameter could be visualized at as much as 3 mm depth. In addition, it was confirmed that we could detect the change in the wall thickness of the blood vessel. These results suggested the feasibility and the applicability of the proposed technique to maintain the arteriovenous fistula using optical transillumination images.
