Abstract(in English) | The block made of a transparent material having a cave inside can function as a completely closed optical box (optical cavity) provided that the inner and outer surfaces of the block are composed of specially arranged planes (namely, principal planes and 45-planes) and the refractive index of the material of the block is larger than √<4+2√<2>>=2.613... No light ray from the inside of the cave can pass through outside of the block because the light ray always totally internally reflects at the outer surfaces of the block. On the other hand, no light ray from outside can enter the cave through this transparent block. Such a completely closed optical cavity is useful for a high-Q optical resonator, optical energy storage, and slow-wave circuits. Here, the principle of confinement of light in the box is described. Also, the results of preliminary experiments using a closed box composed of GaP are shown. |
