Compact and Large Capacity Optical Identification Device for Optical Fiber Line Management

Abstract(in English) We present an optical identification device (OID) for an effective management of optical network facilities. The OID has a unique address, and it is gathered from a central office by an optical measurement such as an optical reflectometry. By this measurement, we can obtain the connectedness between optical components on the same optical path and manage detailed attribute information by relating significant information to the unique address. Precise fault isolation and location by referring to the unique address is also available. They led us to decrease in the operation expenditure. OID is fabricated based on a superimposed fiber Bragg grating (FBG). Fabricated OIDs had 16-bit information capacity within the exposure length of 1 cm. This means that 16 Bragg reflections at different wavelengths are generated. We also fabricated unequally spaced FBG corresponding to an arbitrary bit pattern. Moreover We demonstrate the ability to read an OID by using coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (C-OFDR) [3,4] and obtain the distribution and unique addresses of OIDs installed in a fiber line.
