Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We develop a framework that theoretically derives the optimal line space to make document images the most legible in terms of accommodation in human vision. This is achieved by using the two-dimensional model of the accommodation mechanism. The document images used here are pseudo images in which black squares are substituted for characters. Consequently, the following results are obtained: (1) the document style (vertical or horizontal writing) can be detected by comparing the model's evaluation function values; (2) the theoretically derived ratio of the optimal line space length to the character height is nearly equal to the psychologically derived one; (3) the optimal line space length changes depending on font size in the same way as the conventional results. These results suggest that the proposed framework is effective in deriving the optimal line space to make document images the most legible and that the optimal line space can be closely related to the accommodation mechanism.
