Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Articulatory differences between one Tokyo and two Osaka dialect speakers are examined with regard to the mechanism of vowel devoicing. Analyses of MRI movies suggested that the Tokyo speaker showed more palatalization for /ki/, /gi/ syllables, and less oral aperture between tongue and palate during /i/ compared to the Osaka speakers. These results are consistent with earlier reported results: i.e. 1) the vowel /i/ is devoiced in all the tokens of the /akite/ and /akise/ for the Tokyo speaker; and 2) arytenoids abduct during /i/ in the transversal images of MRI. The combined results of the two studies suggest how vowel devoicing is physically controlled for Tokyo speakers.
