Relationships between spectral distance correlation and sound localization in the median plane

Abstract(in English) Spatial audio technologies allow audio media to contain spatial information more flexibly than conventional stereo or surround systems, and could be one of technologies for the multimedia enrichment in the next generation. Those that use headphones to present sound to a listener generally exploit head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to simulate the reflection and diffraction at the outer ear of the listener. In using headphones, we often encounter an issue that a virtual sound source in front of the listener is perceived as if it located at the zenith or the rear, sometimes at the inside of the head. In order to find out the reason, we employed distance correlation between pairs of HRTF spectra for different directions in the median plane as a measure of similarity, focusing on whether headphone calibration was applied or not. The results showed that the HRTF of the frontal direction is similar to that of the rear, and that the similarity of HRTFs of the frontal direction for the cases with and without headphone calibration is at the same level as that between the front and the rear both with headphone calibration.
