Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The sound localization determining the direction and distance of the origin of subthreshold sound stimuli has been considered to play a key role in surviving animals. The objective of this report is to investigate a functional role of spontaneous spike rates, through computer simulations, in a spherical bushy neuron model of the antero-ventral cochlear nucleus where the cochlear nucleus relays sound stimuli from the primary auditory nerve to the medial superior olive complex detecting the direction of sound. In the computer simulations, the transmembrane potentials in response to a sinusoidal inhomogeneous Poisson process filtered by an alpha function were solved with Runge-Kutta method in which stochastic sodium channels and stochastic high- and low-threshold potassium channels were incor-porated into the stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model. Then, the information rate was estimated by subtracting the noise entropy from the total entropy where the entropies were calculated from obervation of action potential firing times. The results showed that the information rate increased, reached a maximal value, and then decreased as the spontaneous spike rate increased, suggesting the observation of a resonance phenonenon dependent upon spontaneous spike rates. It is concluded that spontaneous spike rates may play an important functional role in efficiently relaying a singal from the primary auditory nerve to medial superior olive complex.
