Numerical simulation of response of nerve fibers to electrical stimulation with staircase waveforms

Abstract(in English) It has been suggested that the electrode-to-axonal distance selective recruitment of relatively thick myelinated axons can be achieved by the down staircase-shape electrical nerve stimulation delivered from an extracellular electrode. However, the response of thin axons such as stimulus pulse duration dependency has not clarified. In this research, we investigated the pulse duration-dependency of the response of a thin myelinated axon model to square pulse stimulation by the numerical simulation. It was shown that short pulse stimulus (duration = 50 μs) activated only axons close to the electrode. In contrast, the stimulus with longer duration (e.g. 200 μs) activated more distant axons without activating near axons. However, stimulus with much longer duration (e.g. 500 μs) did not show distance-selective recruitment of axons due to occurrence of anodal break excitation of axons in the neighborhood of the electrode. In addition, thin axons (⪇1 μm) at more than 300 μm far from the electrode could not be activated by the square pulse stimulation.
