Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | This study attempts to explore the effects of cognitive processing load (i.e., semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic) on storing functions and its relationship with L2 proficiency. Forty-four Japanese EFL learners completed four types of Reading Span Tests (RST) under different cognitive load manipulations on processing (i.e., semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic) and two English proficiency tests. The main results were that scores on the RST, which places a cognitive load on syntactic processing in particular, was significantly poorer than those of other types of RSTs and correlated significantly with English proficiency scores. The results suggest that English proficiency largely depends on the degree of automatization of syntactic processing. |
