Investigation High-Density Opto-Electronic Interface Circuit for On-Board and Inter-Board Bidirectional Communication

Abstract(in English) We have investigated the opto-electronic interface circuit for on-board/inter-board high-density optical interconnection, that consists of the configuration with VCSELs and surface-injection-type PDs positioned on the same substrate and the input-output configuration using polymer waveguides through semiconductor lenses. Design of the lens for achieving connection of the VCSELs and PDs with polymer waveguides through the same structure was investigated, and the simulation results of the lens diameter of less than 320μm(mask diameter of larger than 60μm) on GaAs substrate of 400μm thickness, multi-mode waveguide core of 50μm thickness, and lower cladding layer of 10μm thickness was obtained. Evaluation of the optical performance of the lens fabricated on GaAs substrate, and the effective diameter of 50μm, curvature diameter of 255 ± 5.5μm and focal length close to the simulation values were achieved. Moreover, the experimental investigation of the optical connection between polymer waveguide fabricated on the semiconductor lens is reported.
