Six-year Operation and Study of the OCR Web Service Using WeOCR : What have changed and what did not

Abstract(in English) The combination of pattern recognition technologies and Grid/Cloud Computing is expected to expand the application area of pattern recognition and to open up new vistas for some future services using pattern recognition. We have been doing a feasibility study on a distributed document recognition environment under the name of OCRGrid since we presented the basic ideas of a Grid-oriented document recognition system in 2004. We developed a platform called WeOCR as a building block for the development of web services using character recognition, and built some experimental servers. The number of accesses has soared since the servers were put into a public service in 2005. This report provides an overview of the current WeOCR system, describes the knowledge obtained through the six-year study on the web-based OCR systems, and shows the recent trends in the application/service developments.
