Miniaturization of Cutoff Waveguide Filter Using Planar Resonators with Transmission Zeros

Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a new compact cutoff waveguide filter using planar resonators for both the generation of multiple transmission zeros and the filter miniaturization. In a conventional waveguide filter consisting of planar resonators called frequency selective surface (FSS), a quarter-wavelength rectangular waveguide is needed for inverter circuits between the resonators. In order to reduce the length of the inverter section, the proposed waveguide filter is constructed by arranging new planar resonators successively in the cutoff waveguide at appropriate intervals. The planar resonator has a resonance at a center frequency in passband and two antiresonances at lower and upper stopbands, thereby providing multiple transmission zeros. As a design example, three-stage bandpass filter is demonstrated at X band. As a result, the size of the designed filter is reduced to about 30% in volume, compared to the conventional FSS-loaded filters. In addition, the designed filter realizes high skirt selectivity due to the transmission zeros located near the passband. The effectiveness of the design results is validated by numerical calculations.
