Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To obtain a high extinction ratio and rapid response for a waveguide-type acoustooptic modulator (AOM), polarization control of the optical guided wave in a new configuration using a reverse-proton-exchange (RPE) LiNbO_3 straight waveguide and a leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) which propagates perpendicular to the straight waveguide was proposed. For a sample with an LSAW wavelength of 136 μm, the maximum modulation efficiencies for optical wavelength of 633, 532, and 473nm were 87, 43, and 40%, respectively. For a sample with an LSAW wavelength of 20 μm, the response time of 22 ns was obtained and was almost equal to the time required for the propagation of the LSAW through he interdigital transducer width.
