Improvement of the Block Matching Algorithm for Face Recognition Across Age Progression : Adjustment of the Block Position

Abstract(in English) Personal authentication using face image is becoming popular nowaday sin various applications. However, if age progression exists between the captured face image and the registered one, the performance gets lowered. Authors proposed before a method of automatic face recognition for personal authentication considering the age progressionusing the block matching method.This method is based on the principle that the face components shift according toage progression,while the featuresof the face components are kept unchanged. The experimental results showed advantage of the proposed method to the conventional method without block matching.However, since the positions of the blocks were fixed, recognition rate got lowered unless the face features were appropriately included in each block. In this paper, a new method of face recognition is proposed using block matching algorithm in while the blocks are adjusted to the proper position, so that the face features are appropriately included in the blocks.The validity of the proposed method for actual face images is also shown.
