Detection of Squamous Cancer based on Structuring Element Extracted from Intraoral Images

Abstract(in English) Oral mucosal disease are often found by a dentist. However, dentists have less experience and knowledge of oral mucosal disease, and it is not easy for dentists to make a diagnosis. Therefore, oral mucosal disease screening techniques are expected. In this study, we propose a method to detect squamous cancer (tongue cancer) from intraoral image. We extract the Structuring Element from intraoral image using Opening Operation and detected squamous cancers. Applying this method, true-positive rate of 100% (6/6), 1 false-positive (1/6) were obtained. Simulation results suggest that the proposed approach is effective in detection of squamous cancer.
