Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The gaze directed toward an individual (DG) typically leads escape or avoidance behavior of the receiver in many animal species. However, at least in some primate species including humans, DG has various communicative functions not limited to the expression of aggression or threat. As one approach to the biological background for the human communication through gaze signals, the present talk introduces 2 of our research projects: (1) the contribution of social factors to the evolution of primate eye morphology, and (2) early development of the communicative function of other's gaze in human infants. Based on these topics, I would like to discuss about the origin of the gaze as a meta-communicative signal for other's intentionality.
