Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies on the processing of verb morphology have been proposed the Single Mechanism Model (Rumelhart and McClelland, 1986) and the Dual Mechanism Model (Pinker and Prince, 1994; Pinker, 1999). Researchers using Japanese materials, qestionnaire studies (Vance, 1991; Klafehn, 2003) and an event-related potential study (Sakai, 2005), have reported different results on the processing Japanese verb morphology. In this study, we measured the event-related potential while Japanese native speakers are making acceptability judgment on Japanese verb morphology. P600 was observed for the stimuli containing violation of conjugation rules. N400 was detected if the stimuli contains non-existing verb stems. These results indicate that Japanese native speakers are using memory and rules to process Japanese verb morphology. At the same time, neither the Single Mechanism Model nor the Dual Mechanism Model Can fully account for these results.
