Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Screen readers play an important role when visually impaired people access the information using a computer. A screen reader is a software that produces voice output of text on a computer screen. Some screen readers have functions of producing voice output of distinctive explanations for kanji. There are a lot of kanji characters that have the same pronunciation, and the role of distinctive explanation is to enable users to identify a unique kanji character only by listening to the explanation. For example, "購" (kou) can be identified by a distinctive explanation "kou-nyu no kou" (kou for kou-nyu). On the other hand, it is difficult to identify a unique kanji "購" by a distinctive explanation "kou-bai no kou" (kou for kou-bai), because there are multiple words with the reading "koubai", such as "勾配", "公売" and "購買" Such confusing explanations for kanji are sometimes produced by the existing screen readers. In this study, we propose a corpus-based method for automatic generation of distinctive explanations for kanji, in which information about intimacy and homophone of kanji is taken into consideration.
