Suppression of Leakage Losses in LNOI Ridge Waveguides

Abstract(in English) We evaluate structural dependency of leakage losses in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) ridge waveguides. Ridge waveguides based on isotropic materials have large leakage loss for TM-like mode. On the other hand, lithium niobate is anisotropic material, and LNOI slab waveguides have different characteristics from isotropic waveguides. Optical characteristics of ridge waveguides relate closely to those of slab waveguides, therefore, we can expect that propagation characteristics of LNOI ridge waveguides are also different from those of isotropic ridge waveguides. In this work, we investigate leakage losses of LNOI ridge waveguides by finite element method. We show that leakage losses of both TE and TM-like modes can be suppressed completely by choosing the waveguide parameters adequately.
