Abstract(in English) Rapidly increasing data traffic, mainly supported by variety of broad-band services, has kept increasing up with 40% of annual rate. Power-efficient LSIs must be devised in order to avoid electric power shortage crisis. However, even with them, in 2025, electric router will eat up 8% of the total 920 TWh generated domestically, exhausting 27 Mt of CO_2 under a modest estimation. A self-sustaining optical switch, which use power when the output state switches, and need no power as long as it keeps the states unchanged, is proposed to replace conventional LSIs for storing and forwarding the incoming packets. Possible drawback, lack of the large scale optical memory to store packets, is relieved by the deflection routing technique which is proposed by Prof. Yukimatsu, of Akita Univ. and his colleagues.
