PD Frequency Response Calibration Method Using Mach-Zehnder Modulator : Comparison with Conventional Method and Error Analysis

Abstract(in English) We propose a calibration method of frequency response of PDs, which use Mach Zehnder optical intensity modulator. Based on the so-called heterodyne technique, National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) have been providing an O/E transfer standard implemented by two Nd : YAG lasers with a complex control systems. Our goal is a simple and easy O/E transfer standard that ordinary users could use it for calibrating their PDs at their laboratories. Such a scheme could be expected to improve the uncertainty drastically. In this paper, we first explain the heterodyne technique and the properties required to the two-lightwave source of the O/E transfer standard. Then, how to implement it by MZ modulator, and how to assure the criterion of "identical power" between two lightwaves are proposed. At last a trial calibration results demonstrated the potential of the proposed calibration method.
