Decision-Directed Phase Noise Compensation for 10 Gbps Millimeter-Wave OFDM Systems with High-Coding-Rate LDPC Code

Abstract(in English) A millimeter-wave 60 GHz-band OFDM system that achieves 10 Gbps bit-rate by using high-coding-rate LDPC code and 64QAM is investigated. This report employs decision-directed phase noise compensation (DD-PNC) in the OFDM system as a countermeasure of the phase noise which occurs in the frequency synthesizer, and evaluates transmission performances by computer simulations and experiments. When a millimeter-wave 60 GHz-band transceiver is implemented by single-chip RF-CMOS IC based on the silicon technology, the relatively large phase noise severely degrades transmission performance of multi-level modulation schemes. In order to solve this problem, DD-PNC, which compensates for the phase noise in demodulation processing of the OFDM system, has been proposed. This report employs a modulation and coding scheme that combines the LDPC code with the coding rate of 14/15 and 64QAM to achieve 10 Gbps bit-rate, which is higher than that of the conventional scheme, and also adopts DD-PNC as a countermeasure of the phase noise. DD-PNC estimates the phase noise by the least-mean-square algorithm by using the decoder output, and then removes the estimated phase noise from the received signal. However, it is expected that the high coding rate decreases the decoding gain, which degrades the performance of DD-PNC. First, the computer simulation evaluates the transmission performance of DD-PNC. The simulation results demonstrated that DD-PNC can achieve 10 Gbps even when the phase noise is -90 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset. In addition, baseband transmission experiment verifies the effectiveness of DD-PNC.
