Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This tutorial presents the latest Forward Error Correction (FEC) technologies for optical communications. In Chapter 2, key terminologies, e.g. net coding gain, are introduced for engineers in optical communications. In Chapter 3, deployment history of three generation of FECs are reviewed, i.e. 1^ generation hard decision block codes, 2^ generation concatenated codes with iterative decoding, and 3^ generation soft decision iterative decoding. In Chapter 4, Shannon limit for which recent FEC is seeking is discussed. In Chapter 5, interesting characteristics of FEC, e.g. error burst behavior, are introduced. Chapter 6 shows recent progress of FEC in 100Gb/s optical transmission systems. In Chapter 7, future perspectives of FEC, e.g. the interplay between FEC and equalizers are discussed.
