Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Rain attenuation statistics are obtained for both up and down links of Ku-band Superbird C, which connects the earth stations at Equatorial Atmosphere Radar (EAR) in West Sumatra, Indonesia and Research Institute of Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) of Kyoto University in Uji, Kyoto during four years from Sept.2002 to Sept.2006. Fairly large yearly variations are found for the rain attenuation statistics at both stations in Japan and Indonesia. Especially, the equivalent propagation path lengths estimated from the equi-propability values with rain attenuation statistics show considerable correlation with the average ground temperature in rain time. These path lengths are, however, associated with convective activities in the tropics or summer time more closely than the rain heights simply expected from the ground temperature. The rain attenuation and its annual statistics are simultaneously calculated from the precipitation cloud echoes measured by the X-band meteorological radar, being in good agreement with the direct measurements by the satellite signals. The radar observations also indicate the decrease of time percentages in high attenuation range due to localized structure of the clouds.
