Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we present an energy efficient network control mechanism. With the advent of various cloud applications, the traffic volume and its patterns have greatly changed and vary from time to time. Thus, traditional network design and control could cause severe congestion along the potential bottleneck links. For such networks, we have proposed a flow-based mesh network, where lots of small sized nodes are connected in a mesh manner and an intelligent flow-by-flow multipath routing mechanism efficiently utilizes the path capacities. However, when the traffic load is low, such high degree path redundancy might not be necessary and could waste huge amount of energy. Therefore, we propose a mechanism, what we call TBS, think before start-up, to reduce power usage of network devices by switching on and off the nodes according to traffic situations. TBS estimates the changes of node utilizations before actually starts up or shuts down a node by calculating current traffic matrix and routing probability matrix, so that the selection maximizes network performance with smallest power consumption. Our simulation results show that TBS optimizes both power usage and network performance.
