Questionnaire Survey of Students and Influence of Smell Space Size in Remote Ikebana System Using Olfactory and Haptic Media

Abstract(in English) In this report, we make a prototype system for remote ikebana (i.e., flower arrangement) with olfactory and haptic media, and do a questionnaire survey of students for the system. In the system, by manipulating a haptic interface device, a teacher or a student can hold a flower, adjust the length of the held flower's stem with a pair of scissors, and impale the flower on a flower pinholder. He/she can also perceive the smell of the flower by using an olfactory display. In the survey, we examine the characteristics of the system, significance of olfactory and haptic media, output timing of olfactory, and so on. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of smell space size (i.e., the radius of sphere in which we can perceive the smell of each flower) on QoE (Quality of Experience), and we illustrate that there exists the optimum value of the smell space size.
