Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Structural similarity (SSIM) index is an image quality measure between the original and its distorted version. It is designed to overcome disadvantages of traditional image quality metrics, i.e., peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean squared error, which are inconsistent with human eye perception. Recently, SSIM is regarded as one of the most reliable image quality metrics. However, a method to measure the similarity between the original and resized images has not been established so far, ever with the use of SSIM, PSNR, etc. In this paper, we propose a method to tackle the problem by using the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT). Our method is a variant of SSIM-based image quality assessments applicable to resized images. Experimental results show validity of the proposed method for evaluating qualities of resized images after scaling, cropping or retargeting.
