Abstract(in English) | Two eye movements are involved in the ocular tracking of a moving visual target. One is a fast and ballistic eye movement, referred to as saccade, which brings the retinal image of the visual target onto the fovea, and another is a slow and smooth eye movement, referred to as smooth pursuit, which keeps the retinal image of the target on the fovea. In usual circumstances, these two different eye movements work cooperatively to look at a single visual object chosen by the neural circuitries for target selection. However, the mechanisms underlying the cooperative behaviors have been unclear. The central question is whether a single neural circuitry dominates the target selection for two eye movement systems or not. In this study, we studied ocular tracking behaviors of four human subjects by using two kinds of visual search tasks of different difficulties for target selection (w/wo the assistance of bottom-up cue). We obtained the following findings: (1) the target selection for smooth pursuit was, in general, successfully carried out irrespective of presence/absence of saccades: (2) the target selection for smooth pursuit was more influenced by bottom-up cues compared with the target selection for saccade: (3) two eye movements could have different targets. We conclude that the systems for saccade and smooth pursuit have their own, different neural circuitries for their target selections. |
