Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Since wireless base stations account for a major portion of energy consumption in mobile networks, there is a growing demand for energy-efficient wireless base stations. Dynamic sleep mode control of a base station reduces considerable energy consumption, however, it must avoid traffic congestion and coverage dead spots in the surrounding cells. In this paper, we propose a wireless base station sleep mode control method based on propagation prediction and traffic load that minimizes traffic congestion and coverage dead spots. Taking the change of traffic load and radio quality caused by sleep mode control into account, we evaluated an energy reduction ratio per day and coverage dead spots ratio assuming a non-uniform LTE cell layout in an urban environment. As a result, we confirmed that the proposed method could achieve higher energy reduction ratio than the conventional sleep mode control method based on traffic load only. With the proposed method, the energy reduction ratio per day was up to 30 % when antenna tilt was set between 5 degrees to 12 degrees.
