Abstract(in English) The existence of carotid artery calcification as an index for arteriosclerosis attracts a great deal of attention. Thus the system for detecting the carotid artery calcification from dental panoramic radiographs has been developed to prompt the patients to check. This paper proposes an improvement for the automatic detection method for carotid artery calcification in digital dental panoramic radiographs based on intensity gradients. This paper reconsiders the parameters setting in the conventional method which is based on the intensities gradients of the carotid artery calcification in the radiograph. The proposed method can also reduce the miss-detection of the carotid artery calcification by elimination of mandible and spine regions. Experimental results show that the good detection performance is obtained.
