Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To describe and elucidate structures of conversations in three-party table-talks, the present study examine the relationship between the turn-allocation and gaze-direction among participants in eating situations. Video recordings of conversations among three women in eating and non-eating condition (Tokunaga et al.) were analyzed respectively using conversation analysis. Based on the model of "turn-taking" system proposed by Sacks et al., a total of 222 turn-taking situations in each conversation condition were categorized into the following three groups: (a) the next turn is allocated by current speaker's selecting next speaker, (b) the next turn is allocated by next speaker's self-selection and (c) the next turn is allocated by current speaker's self-selection. We also analyzed that the gaze-direction among participants for each turn-taking situation. Results demonstrate that most of the turns in eating condition were allocated by self-selection of current or next speakers without gaze interaction between participants, whereas those in non-eating conditions were mostly allocated by current speaker's selecting next speaker with gaze between current and next speakers. These results suggest that constraints of turn-taking organization are weaker in eating condition than those in non-eating condition, and therefore the turn-taking in table-talks tend to be allocated by participants' spontaneous statements.
