Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a novel evaluation method of communication systems based on quantitative analysis of speech acts. Despite of decades of efforts for developing video-mediated communication (VMC) systems, it has not been clear the relationship between system design of VMC and communicative effects of conversations. First, we clarify structures of VMC-based conversation by analyzing dialog-act structures, such as frequencies of the dialog act tags and those of the adjacent tag pairs. Then, we apply the method to evaluations of two types of three-party conversations (poster presentations and brain storming discussions) using two VMC configurations: (1) single monitor per person configuration, and (2) multi-monitor per person configuration. For analyzing video recorded data of VMC, we have transcribed participants' utterances and labeled each utterance with dialog act tag. The analyses show the conversation structures of poster presentations and brain-storming. It has found that face orientation plays an importance role for brain storming discussions.
