Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The present study examined how observers' impression of action was formed when another person tried to hand an object to the observer as politely as possible. Participants saw the movies where a professional beauty advisor, either politely or casually, was handing a wooden cylinder in face-to-face manner and they evaluated these movies for politeness, smoothness, attractiveness, etc. The movies were recorded under two situations (i.e. recording with or without a recipient). We found that the participants were able to understand politeness indicated by the actor (i.e. professional beauty advisor) in the action. Additional analyses suggested that different factors affected politeness impression depending on situations, such as whether the recipient for the object handed was there.
