Low-loss polymer optical waveguide using amorphous PET

Abstract(in English) Amorphous polyethylene terephthalate (PET G) multimode optical waveguides are fabricated by the spin coating method, and the refractive index and the propagation loss were measured. The refractive index of the PET-G film evaluated by the spectroscopic ellipsometer is higher than that of the perfluorinated polyimide and the poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA). The multimode PET-G optical waveguide with 12 μm-thickness and 46 μm-width was fabricated by mechanical grinding using a dicing saw, and the propagation loss was measured by the cut-back method to be 0.30 dB/cm, 0.12 dB/cm, 0.35 dB/cm and 0.70 dB/cm for 660 nm, 830 nm, 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelength, respectively.
