Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We propose a preprocessing of binary character images for the case when using feature vectors which are intended for the recognition of gray-scale character images, such as ridge features. We generate gray-scale images from given binary images by the distance transform which produces sharper images than using the Gaussian filter. Moreover, it propose techniques to cope with the problem of the overlapping strokes of characters, which is intrinsic of binary character images. Experiments using the ETL9B database show that the proposed method improves the recognition rate by 0.13% compared with the preprocessing by the Gaussian filter.
