Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent studies have demonstrated that active exploration of 3-D object views facilitates subsequent object recognition. In the present study, we conducted an experiment in which participants explored 3-D object views by using on of their hands to rotate a handle attached to the side of a display. This allowed a more realistic rotation of objects. We confirmed a facilitative effect of active exploration on the view matching process reported in previous studies. For most participants, this facilitation was observed in the direction that was easiest for rotation of the hand. Our findings suggest that the object recognition process, which is thought to be based on visual information, can also be affected by the biomechanical constraint of hand rotation.
