Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We can discriminate between animate and inanimate things and this ability is called animacy perception. Animacy perception is thought to be a foundation of social cognition. We investigated neural mechanism working for animacy perception by recording Event-Related Potentials (ERPs) during reaching action under a motion Turing test condition. In motion Turing test, participants were asked to observe an object, either of an animate thing (turtle) or an inanimate thing (robot), which was covered in a box so that they judged by only its movements whether it was animate or inanimate things. We compared ERPs when they felt it as animate with those when they felt it as inanimate. As a result, we found that the amplitude of ERPs in left infero-frontal region was significantly different between the two conditions. This result suggests that the attribution of animacy is related with the activation in left infero-frontal region. In addition, we implemented the different types of motion, which differed from the actual motion of a turtle in speed and direction change, to a robot and examined whether ERPs differed across the different types of the robot's motion. We found that the more animate the robot's motion was, the less the amplitude in right occupito-temporal region was. This result suggests that the analysis of animate motion is related with the activation in right occupito-temporal region. These findings mean that animacy perception consists of two neural mechanisms.
