Abstract(in English) | We have retrieved a lot of English complex prepositions and the like, and have compiled the database thereof. Our attention in this paper is focused on comparing English complex prepositions and Japanese complex particles. The comparison has clarified the similarity and distinction between them, and then have specified the respective characteristics in lexicon and syntax. We can indicate that both complexes increase the tendency of grammaticalization and are precise expressions in common. In contrast, we can remark that English complex prepositions have the foreign words, most of which are the French-derived or Latin-derived, as the core of the phrase, whereas Japanese complex particles have the native words, which are not derived from Chinese characters, as the core of the collocation. Referring to the database of the complexes, machine translation system will improve the accuracy of the translation results, by processing with the phrasal expression as a chunk. |
