Experimental Performance Evaluation of TCP Proxy Mechanism TCP-gSTAR for High Speed Satellite Links

Abstract(in English) The satellite link speed has become larger such as terrestrial links. For example, the maximum link speed of WINDS (Wideband InterNetworking engineering test and Demonstration Satellite) which was launched on 2008 is 1.2Gbit/s. A TCP proxy mechanism TCP-gSTAR which accelerates the transmission rate of traditional TCP such as TCP-NewReno over high speed satellite links has been proposed. TCP-gSTAR was shown to offer high performance in a simulation experiment. Since the simulation environment can never truly replicate an actual environment, it is indispensable to implement and evaluate TCP-gSTAR in a real environment. Thus, this paper evaluates the basic performance of TCP-gSTAR on experimental networks that use a hardware network emulator and WINDS. As a result, in case of the network which uses the hardware network emulator, TCP-gSTAR yield the better performance than the other TCP variants. Next, this paper evaluates TCP-gSTAR over the network which uses WINDS. As a result, it is found that the throughput of TCP-gSTAR is larger than that of other TCP variants when bit error rate is high.
