A Cooperative Failure Detection Method in Different Layers for Network Services Based on Distributed Components

Abstract(in English) Network services based on distributed components are increasingly attracting attention. In such network services, they can provide advanced network services with lower cost by assigning and reusing useful components running on remote nodes. Also, even if a network service component fails, a component on another node can be substituted to run the same function. However, there is not only one kind of failure: software component failures, but also hardware failures of entire node and networking equipments such a router and fiber link, etc. In general, it is difficult to specify a failure occuring in different layers in a unified way using existing failure detection methods. We propose a new method to identify failures for network services, that determines failures at the application layer and also those occurring in the network layer by collecting a small number of messages with cooperation between multiple overlay networks. Finally, we evaluate the performance and the feasibility of the proposed method by both simulation experiments and implementation.
