IEEE 802.11af Standardization Activities: TV White Space Security Issues

抄録(英) IEEE 802.11af is the IEEE task group (TG) responsible for specifying the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) amendment in wireless local area network (WLAN) system for operation in the TV white space. TV white space is defined as the spectrum allocated to TV broadcasting services, but is unused by the service locally and temporarily. The main focus of TGaf is to modify the existing 802.11 specification to comply with the regulations related to TV white space utilization, frequency rebanding to meet the TV spectrum and necessary MAC/PHY alterations required by operation in TV white space. One of the main issues discussed in the TGaf is the issue of security in the white space operation. Among other national regulators, in the US, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) required WLAN devices to obtain permission from a primary user Geolocation Database (GDB) before operating in a specific TV channel. In the WLAN configuration, the access point (AP) will be responsible of obtaining the accessible TV channels from the GDB. The connectivity from a WLAN AP to the GDB may be through the wired or wireless medium. It is also mandated that the connectivity to obtain the TV channels to be protected by security means. This indicates the possible employment of existing security standards such as IEEE 802.lli and 802.1X. This article provides a discussion on how these standards are related to the establishment of a secured link between the WLAN devices and the TV primary user GDB.
