Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Many IP forwarding devices, such as routers, are composed of two types of modularized functional elements, "Control Element (CE)" and "Forwarding Element (FE)". CEs are responsible for the control of the overall IP forwarding operation of the device. FEs are responsible for the IP packet processing associated with each IP forwarding operation of the device. This constitution method allows the devices to take a flexible device configuration and extend the functions and performance of each element individually. Such devices usually have some kind of proprietary interface between the CE and the FE. Currently, the Forwarding and Control Element Separation Working Group (ForCES WG) of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is defining a protocol and associated mechanisms for standardizing the exchange of information between the logically separate functionality of the CE and the FE. The ForCES protocol realizes a multivendor IP forwarding device composed of elements from several different vendors. This encourages competition in the market by new entries. This paper gives a lecture on the ForCES protocol.
